Winding down ...

Zandra and I have been slowly winding down as my time in New York nears its end. I leave for Munich on Monday evening, so will just spend the next few days washing clothes, repacking my stuff, and researching the next leg of my trip.
Friday night (last night) was our big night out in Manhatten. After a late start into the city we headed to Anna's apartment near Greenwich Village. The weather has continued to be humid and uncomfortable. We had dinner at a really nice Thai restaurant near Anna's then to a nearby bar (Kenny's Castaways) to see this band, Hubcap (from up-state New York) perform.
I find it amusing how New Yorkers are really impressed with the myriad of food/restaurant types on offer in the city. To me, it is normal to have a wide culinary choice as Australia is very multicultural, probably more so than NY. They were like: "have you ever had Thai food before?!!" It was very good, but I think I still prefer Madame Wu's in Norwood!
The band were really good. Think mellow Pearl Jam (Rearviewmirror) but with a country twang in the vocals. There wasn't a huge turnout, so out enthusiasm was rewarded by the band with free stickers, drinking with them after and them joining us for brunch the next morning. Due to the late night and beverages consumed; today has been a slow recovery day. We're back in Rye now and just had an outdoor BBQ dinner. Zandra and Aunty Elysse then surprised me with an early rendition of 'Happy Birthday' and pie and Limoncello as a gesture towards my upcoming time in Italy. It was really sweet of them. Z and I are still a bit dazy from lack of sleep, but are heading out soon to the local bar (The High Street Roadhouse) for a quick Saturday night drink.
So not too much to add. We are going to go thru the photos before Z heads back to Boston tomorrow, so there may be some more to add. I'm trying to get as much as possible down before I leave as from now on it will be harder to make as regular and detailed (hurrah! some of you may think!) updates as I'll be finding and using internet cafes etc. At the moment the basic plan is two nights in Munich, two nights in Rome, then a little way south to Latina, a bit further down along the coast to Sorrento, then up to Florence, before returning to Rome, then off to London.
Take care, E x

Fake bag shopping in Canal Street, Chinatown

Thursday 10 June 2005

Ok. So obviously the bags themselves are real. I'm not spending my hard-earned dosh on imaginary bags here folks, the fake-ed-ness comes in that they are rip-offs of designer styles. It was quite an experience actually, and one of the few here that I won't be rushing to do again in a hurry. The weather's really warmed up, and the humidity has taken me by surprise. I'm glad I won't be in NY in the middle of summer. What makes it worse, compared to the higher, but drier and more intense heat of SA is the congestion of people and also the garbage that they make. Everything is sticky and sweaty and smelly and, especially in Chinatown yesterday, there are just piles of garbage on the sidewalk awaiting collection. I mentioned that the day before at the Museum was mentally intense, well our shopping day was physically, mentally and emotionally taxing! There are hundreds of stalls of bags, shoes, jewellery, souveniers etc etc etc lining Canal Street and thousands of people looking for a bargain. The idea is not to pay the asking price, so there's lots of pushing and shoving and haggling and people yelling at you: "You like? I give to you for 15? Wholesale price?" or "2 for 30, I give you 2 for 30". Zandra and I managed to get a few bargains, and I made a couple (ok, one) good deal. It was exhausting tho, and I found myself thinking fondly of home and how you can go out on somedays and not really see anyone! Bonnydoon is sounding pretty good right now Vanessa! Book me in for as soon as I get back!
After 4 hours of walking and bargaining in the heat and humidity, we met some of Zandra's friends for a huge meal in a restaurant in Chinatown, but the relief was brief. As soon as we had finished we were being yelled at to leave as people were waiting for a table.
Then headed into Little Italy, which is really just one longish street filled with yet more souveniers and lots of cafes and restaurants and some clothing and gift stores. I found it amusing that nearly all of the cafes and restaurants had signs out front proclaiming: "voted one of the best restaurants on Mulberry Street in the 2005 guide ..." Everything is painted in red, white and green, from fire hydrants to street signs, poles and fences. It made me excited for the upcoming leg of my trip tho! Had some gelati to try and cool down then made our way slowly home on the subway and train; still happy with our day and purchases.
Love to you all! Sorry I haven't been able to write back to everyone, but thanx for your news. I do love to hear it, even tho I can't keep up with getting back to you. Take care, luv Erica xo

Art is everywhere in New York. And its exciting that it's not just confined to the galleries and museums. Today was the first day we actually ventured inside a museum, but already we've stumbled across many exhibits. Some have been posters mounted to the fence along Bryant Park, inside the foyers of buildings, at the design schools, along the sidewalks with people selling sketches, photos and paintings, and even here, ON the sidewalk outside the Guggenheim. This was one of many quick but poignant (think I spelled that correctly ...) chalk drawings by this 'artist' (well I think they're an artist). I found and photographed about 8 of them. Inspired!

I joked that this is how I've seen Zandra most, but its not true. She's living in Boston now (3 hours north of NYC) but back for the 2 weeks I'm here. She's had friends calling constantly to catch up while she's back, but tends to ignore their calls when we're doing stuff, and then quickly tries to catch up with them while I'm otherwise occupied, taking self-indulgent photos.

Got a few pics of the Guggenheim Museum to follow (these are some more 'self-indulgent' ones I warned you of ...) It was closed already so we haven't been inside, but its amazing to look at. Also it doesn't get dark here till 9pm, so we're trying to make the most of the daylight hours ...

Zandra and I on the steps of the Met after we were promptly all herded out when it closed.
Its been wonderful getting to spend so much time with Zandra. This is about the 4th time we have 'met'. And also, we realised, the longest amount of time either of us has spent 'one-on-one' with one other person. Funnily enough we're not sick of each other yet. It's going to make it more difficult to leave here than home, as I don't know when I'll see any of my family here again. They've been so great. I feel like I'm getting a late version of the exchange/host family experience.
It's a bit of a worry tho, Z and I have already started finishing each other's sentences and seem to know what the other's thinking about. We spend most of our time talking and laughing. I can't remember the last time I've laughed so much.

Here I am, actually in front of the real life MONET'S WATER LILIES (and yes Dad, the museum did allow flash photography inside, we didn't really like to tho, so this was the only one we took). I just had to do this for you too Vanessa, it's your email account's namesake!
This is just one of the paintings on permanent display in the massive huge GIGANTIC expanse of the gallery. We spent hours trailing through the work of Picasso, Braque, Miro, Gaugin, Monet, Degas etc etc etc. It caught me by surprise, the feeling when I realised that although I had 'seen' some of these pictures hundreds of times, these were the real ones. And I was up close (but did not touch!) the work that these artists that I admire so much had touched.
I know many of you would have already experienced this, or not think its a big deal. But its the first time I have, and I'm sure, the first of many. I feel very very lucky.

WARNING! SELF-INDULGENT PHOTOS AHEAD!

(Some) of the ceiling inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Currently showing is the Chanel (as in Coco Chanel) exhibition. Kellie and Lauren, you would have loved this SO MUCH! I learnt so much and was so overwhelmed and inspired. What was really interesting was Coco's take on using the colour red in fashion (it made me think of you K!) she believes that as red is the colour of blood, and we have so much of it on the inside, shouldn't we show some of it on the outside too?

Mani-pedi-ballet

Today (Tuesday, work with me folks), I had my first manicure and pedicure! After the last 6 months of my extra on-my-feet job and a week of tramping around the city, it was a welcome relief to have a foot spa and massage! I then also checked out the Nine West outlet store (that's shoes for you blokes) What more could a girl want? Well an evening in Manhatten at the American Ballet wouldn't go astray!
Aunty Elysse took Zandra and myself to see Raymonda, at the Metropolitan Opera House in Lincoln Centre. This area includes a number of opera and ballet theatres and the Julliard School, as seen in 'Centrestage' and 'Save the Last Dance'. Its a really new ballet (Raymonda) but in the classical style. The sets and costumes were dazzling and the dance amazing. I couldn't help thinking tho, its a good thing the lead character was very wealthy and beautiful, cos with a name like Raymonda, she could have been teased badly otherwise!
The Metropolitan Opera House is an amazing building, with luscious red velvet floors and walls and a thickly gold painted roof, circling staircases, amazing chandeliers and light fittings, art everywhere and a woman in the bathrooms who directs you to the empty stalls!
We ended the evening with a meal across the road at a restaurant, dining alfresco (I may have mentioned this is still quite a novelty in New York) at 11pm. Once again, its like living a movie or TV show ...
While this has already been an amazing experience, I'm finding myself feeling more and more fond of home and imagining how these experiences can still be translated to that setting ...

Zandra and I took a quick day trip to Central Park. Quick, because soon after this pic was taken (we took a ride on a huge Carousel, beautiful with some of the largest hand-carved horses in the country) there was an unexpected thunderstorm. Turns out NY weather is much like Melbourne weather. We took shelter under a nearby bridge and waited about 20 minutes until it passed. Here we met Tom; a retired high school science teacher who 'doesn't like material things, but ideas and concepts; wide open spaces and wilderness areas' (you kind to have to imagine a typical Noo York accent ...) Zandra and I seem to be attracting these weird people who just want to talk to us (and people think Noo Yorkers aren't friendly ...) Mind you, they've all been men ... apart from one woman ... who was a lesbian ... Things that make you go hmmm?

I have fallen in love with this painting.
We came across an outdoor exhibition/art sale near the Washington Square Gardens in the West Village. I couldn't find the artist around, but got her card and email. This canvas is about 2m X 2m and (I think) wonderfully illustrates much of the apartment building atmosphere of the area. I want to track it down and get her to ship it back to me!

Doc Watson's (pub-y type thing) on Upper East Side of NY, where we had brunch. It was here I was introduced (rather rudely I thought) to the concept of 'free coffee refills' (HALLELUYAH!!) I had put my empty sugar packs in the empty coffee mug, then asked for another coffee. The 'waitress' brought the jug of coffee over sans new mug. She then made me take the sugar packs out of my old mug and refilled it! (in case this isn't translating properly, I don't mind the free refills in the same mug, but as I am obviously a stoopid tourist, can't I get a new one and promise to never ever do it again!?!)
I have now learnt to keep my mug free of all non directly coffee related residue until I am SURE that my coffee drinking in that one place (and mug) is over.
ALSO! I LOVE LOVE LOVE being able to go some where and just ask for a 'regular coffee'! (this is coffee with two sugars and milk!) The Americans have got one thing right ...

This was the first 'hot' day of the season (Summer starts June 21) and the beach was full of people oiled up and sunbaking. Realised that you just wouldn't see people tanning to that extent in Australia anymore (now they just go to tanning salons and spray ons!) Please note the long sleeve T (sorry, but it just didn't seem hot to me ...)

Christina Aguilera cake-shopping in the West Village

Ok, I'll get to explaining the subject heading soon enough. There is so much that has been happening, but after spending ages uploading those photos (so you'ld better appreciate them!) I'll have to keep the last few days of my adventures brief.
Overall it has been wonderful. I now realise exactly how long overdue it has been for me taking a break and a holiday. If I ever let it go this long again (3.5 years, I think!) I give you all permission to hit me on the head with a shovel Drop Dead Fred style! My sleeping finally seems to be getting under control too, with 9 hours last night!
Anyway, Zandra has been great (so have Aunty Elysse and Uncle Michael, but Zandra puts up with me more!) Its amazing having someone who I've only really met a handful of times and who lives on the otherside of the world, but understands me and we both get along so well. Also, it turns out she's been discovering much of New York along with me!
Our first day in the City began at Grand Central Terminal (HUGE HUGE HUGE!) after getting off the train and making our way, slowly, to the Pier to catch the ferry. There was so much to see along the way! Including my first police car chase, which confused me at first, as the police sirens sound like toy cars! How can any criminal take that seriously?
The ferry tour was great, I've said a bit about in on the photos, so won't bore you too much. We then, slowly, made our way back to Grand Central, exploring Midtown along the way. We saw Brownstones and fire escapes (Zandra thinks I'm crazy, but I love fire escapes) little shops, bars and galleries thru the Hell's Kitchen area. Then Broadway, Rockefeller Centre, lots of public art etc etc etc
(That was Thursday) Friday I had my appointment with graphic designer Paul Sahre in the Chelsea area. For those who don't know, I contacted him a few weeks ago after seeing him give a lecture in Adelaide a couple of years ago. He spent about 1.5 hours with me, just talking about New York, Australia, Berocca (apparently they don't have it in the US), life, design, work etc. It was great. And very inspiring. He was so down to earth too! Considering some of the work he's done and the stage he's at, he could be allowed to have so much attitude, but he treated me like a peer. I guess its the difference about living in such a large city where you really a a teeny tiny drop in a bucket.
After that (and me on a design-inspired high!) we explored Chelsea, some galleries and shops. Met a few characters, very interesting to people watch etc.
The city is very dog-friendly. Many stores allow people to bring their dogs in. The funny thing is tho, that the dogs are either very big, or very small. No in between. They also seem to serve as a way of making people friendlier to each other, as people will stop to talk to and ask questions (about the dog usually) of the person it belongs too.
On Saturday (the first really sunny day) we met some of Zandra's friends for a picnic in Central Park and to see the Killers perform a concert ('somebody told me, that you had a boyfriend, who looked like ...') Very good nice relaxing night. We then stayed over her friends apartment (teeny tiny like some of the dogs!) that the two girls pay $1050 EACH a month to rent! My bedroom window looked onto a brick wall, not quite like my 'Wisteria Lane' view in Rye. It was quite an experience. The kitchen is the size of a pantry, which obviously encourages people to eat out more. So Sunday was a very 'New York' day, with brunch around the corner from Dena's apartment, some window-shopping, before catching two subways to the West Village, with more wandering, window-shopping and gallery-looking as we made our way to Zandra's other friend Anna's apartment. This apartment, while only a one-bedroom, seemed larger and brighter (and she pays $1700 a month). Its just around the corner from Bleecker Street, which is kind of like Rundle Street I suppose. Lots of gourmet shops, cafes, gift stores etc. As it was Sunday there were a few street stalls set up that we perused before going inside (alfresco dining is a novelty) for coffee and gelati in a beautiful pasticceria. This is where we were when Christina Aguilera entered (trying to look discreet with HUGE sunglasses, all designer-grungey clothing, blonde-blonde-BLONDE hair and a 3 person entourage including her husband. I will admit it was kinda cool. While she was selecting her cakes, everyone in the place (which wasn't many really) soon realised who she was. She left with her bodyguard when her limo arrived outside, and left her husband to collect her order.
Dinner was at John's Pizza which is also very well known (and I can understand why, the 'pie' was amazing!) and has been frequented by my hero Al Pacino! We then moved onto Magnolia Bakery (famous in Sex and the City) for a Red Velvet cupcake. There was a huge line of people (Seinfeld soup nazi style) filing in and out of the shop. But well worth it. As you can see, I'm eating my way thru New York! I won't have to worry about my bag being overweight, it'll be me!
I know this is all very factual, and then we did this, and then we did this. But there's just so much to see and do. I'm having such a great time. Zandra's friends have all been so nice and we have perfected the right balance of sight-seeing and just wandering, eating, exploring and enjoying ourselves. Its just what I needed and a great holiday.
Hope you're all well. I'll try to write a few shorter but more frequent entries soon. Thanx for all the emails and messages, I do miss you all, but am really enjoying myself too. Take care, luv Erica. x
